I gave a work colleague a smurf and she bluetacked it to her computer monitor
LOL I did exactly the same thing Karen, I gave gift smurf to my boss as a birthday present, and he blutacked it to his monitor...I gave it him because in the 70's he worked at a national garage and used to give away the smurfs :)
Long, long ago, deep in the forest, there was a hidden village where tiny creatures lived. They called themselves the Smurfs. They were good.

Great topic Jocelyn. :-D

Yes, I think like many here the first reaction I get is "your crazy" until they actually seem them, then it is "you are REALLY" crazy but a couple of seconds later it is "ooooh, look at the scot smurf, look at the indian, look at the........." etc. etc. It can then take quite a while to usher the visitor out of the smurf room. I don't think I have ever had a nasty or mean comment about them although EVERY time my mother visits she asks when we are going to sell them!

Why is it called "common sense" when it is so rare.......

It's been over 2 years since anyone (besides Mrs Dyar, Jack and of course myself) has seen my smurfs. They have no idea how many I have now and they thought I had tons and was insane over 2 years ago.....heaven knows what they would of them all now.

My family just think its funny and expect it from me because I have always just been a big kid at heart. They roll their eyes a little but at least it makes it easy for them to think of something to get me for my birthday etc.

My mum is always on the lookout for smurf stuff and tells me when she sees something smurfy. She found a boxer smurf in the bottom of our old toy chest the other day and handed it on :)

The work collegues think I'm nuts but I'm pretty sure they thought I was before that anyway. The kids though think its great and we often spend half a lesson just talking about smurfs! They like to know how many I've got now and where I keep them all and which one is the most expensive. Some kids even come in with smurfs they've dug out of their parents old toys and ask me to tell them how much they're worth. I think they're trying to rip me off!

Trish made me some smurfy earrings and I wore them to work the other day. The teachers all rolled their eyes but the kids thought it was the coolest thing out and some even asked me to get them a pair!

I think if you can admit you're partly insane then you probably aren't! :?

Last year I gave my sister inlaw a gift and flower smurf as a wedding gift (there was other stuff too, i'm not that cheap) She looked at it like it had fleas and said oh how nice a smurf, everyone there thought I had lost my mind so no smurf lovers in that crowd, I get mixed signals driving around with my smurf sign on my car. Some people look at me like I'm crazy then when I stop people start talking to me about them and telling me how they had them as kids. I held up the line at Mc donalds last time because the cashier started reminising about her childhood. I know only true smurf fans get the excitment of a parcel comeing in the mail and getting that super hard to find smurf you have been after for so long.. everyone else falls over and says you spent how much!!?? Whereas smurf collectors go WOW what a find!!! Thank goodness we have each other otherwise we would really feel out of place in the real world!! :-D

Yes good point Gerda...where would we all be without this forum. It's quite possible that I would of stopped collecting over 2 years ago if it wasn't for all you guys.....at least I blame you all when Mrs Dyar yells at me.....I say you're all a bad influence....although Mrs Dyar isn't THAT blonde.

To be honest with you I do not speak about it with anybody except with my family.
I think that many people around me begin too much with serious to understand.

i'll just add in my two cent newby answer...
i don't actually collect smurfs, though i DO think i'm going to start looking for smurf clothes to wear. my main interest is in the cartoon. i LOVE LOVE LOVE the smurf cartoon! i watched faithfully as a kid every saturday morning until it was cancelled and have seen all the movies at one time or another. i have decided to start collecting the movies and eventually all the cartoon episodes on DVD - assuming that at some point they will be released on DVD.

so my smurf obsession is different than those of you here.... but i walk around humming the smurf theme song and use smurf words and make smurf references, and my loved ones and friends laugh and think it's funny and call me a dork . and i like it! :-D

my goodness! i had to correct all those typos!

yes we are insane!

I had a shock the other day as we have a new girl temporary replacing
someone at my work..

I spoke to her nicely on her first day last week and yesterday I walked by and she said! oh! I saw your website its really nice!

and I turned red and thought what website? how did she know?
then I asked which one...and she said the smurf one! I felt so dumb
as my secret was exposed to a stranger.! she of course thought it was cool, but I felt invaded..and insane! hehehe and any serious thoughts of her about me are now gone!! ....

but really I do love my website! and it will always surprise people to know
we collect blue toys..

so enjoy

Your website is great Attom so I'm not surprised she was very impressed.....although she, Mrs Beer & Mrs Dyar will have to understand that we are already engaged to our smurfs. :)

I used to wear a gold ring on my wedding finger, it had my football club badge on it, once Mrs Beer realised it was gonna be hard work to get me to the church on time, she nagged at me till i moved the ring to my right hand ! So much for the marriage to my footy team then ! :) :)

aww.... well you know what? that kind of thing no longer matter once you are an adult. nobody cares what you do with your money and time. the teasing won't last. just remember that YOU are not afraid to be exactly who and what you are - and should ALWAYS be exactly who and what you are no matter what. knowing you are you will give you more confidence and win more respect, then always trying to change yourself for others.
