Hi guys, very interesting discussion.

I have a set of these flags somewhere, I know I definitely unpacked them along with everything else so I will hopefully go and check a bit later. I am fairly sure they will be the same as Steve's as I think I got mine at roughly the same time he did but I will check just in case. :D

Welcome aboard Dennis, great pic. :welcome:

Why is it called "common sense" when it is so rare.......

British flag possibly something to do with Gibraltar?

Gibraltar seems to have two different kinds of flag anyway, one looks nothing like the British one and one looks similar but not the same.

I just found this page though

Ah right - sorry Pete..didn't realise that Karen had posted it before me (sorry K).

I went back and checked my flags..I have the 2 plastic flags for the missing ones (green, white, green and yellow/red stripes)..but they are blank..anyone have those 2 spare? :)
Long, long ago, deep in the forest, there was a hidden village where tiny creatures lived. They called themselves the Smurfs. They were good.

Hi Pete,

No, I didn't get this set in my even younger days, I was talking about the collecting of cards of that particular world cup. Collecting these cards is like baseball cards and every WC they have a book for cards of all the players etc. I have that book of 1982 and the flags fit the countries perfectly.

Personally I do not think the flag has anything to do with Gibraltar. Looking at this from a Spanish point of view and their position on Gibraltar as occupied land they would never put the British flag on a Spanish set. I put my money on 100 years of soccer but it is all speculation and won't hold up in court.

Googling CDC has probably given the answer of both the flags of the provinces as CDC in Spains stands for "convergència democràtica de catalunya" see http://www.convergencia.org/index.php. The one flag of Catalunya and of the other 2 are probably of the areas they are very big in as a political party.

I guess this means two options for the British flag:
A) 100 years of soccer
B) Political connection with Britain
as I do not think that a Spanish national party is in any way happy with Gibraltar, looking at how they feel about the situation of the rock over there.

Dennis.

Smurfs and politics :?

LOL, don't blame me, I asked my dad, I blame him. :) :) :) :) :)

Perhaps it stands for the Falklands? It was 1982 after all! (take cover before someone throws something at me..) :) :) :) :) :)
