It's been in the Mail on Sunday as well, everyone is blogging about it and it's already pushing all the Smurf sites down the Search engines because so many news sites are running the story.

My parents just phoned me and said that this made headline news on cnn here in the states. I did not see it, and they did not tell me exactly what was said, I will try to get the info out of them or stayed glued to the tv and see if I can catch the story myself.
Smurfs are starting to get noticed, but not sure it is in a good way. On the bright side I have never seen my hubby more happy after he watched the video of the smurfs being blown up

I was driving around in the car this morning and got to hear the Mick Molloy show on the radio...Mick Molloy is an Australian comedian who's pretty funny.....anyway he brought up the subject of this Unicef ad with the smurfs and how it has upset kids in Belgium etc etc...he suggested that they should now have Suicide Bomber Smurf & Car Bomb Smurf in the range. He also went on to say that next they will be shooting Tin Tin with an AK-47 as part of the assault on Belgium cartoon characters. Then he said...if they are going to blow things up why don't they blow up the crap ones instead like Pokemon (I agree :) ). He went on for a while about smurfs bringing in the communist angle S.M.U.R.F. (Small Men Under Red Father)......it was fun to hear them dedicate a segment to the Smurfs.......great world wide promotion for Unicef and the Smurfs :D

Hi Rashleigh

I have just contacted the station and left a message asking for the transcript of the segment or a recording. If they send or fax one to me then I will post it here for you.

Ooo all this smurfy news is getting VERY EXCITING!!! Not sure I would like a Saddam Smurf, or Colonel Smurfaffi but I guess smurfs run the UK and the US so it could be the new history set?

A Ronald and Nancy Reagan Smurf with an Astrologer Smurf?
A Bill and Monica Smurf?
A Winston Churchill Smurf (with cigar)?
An Iron Lady Smurfette?
A Marilyn Smurfette singing "Happy Smurfday to you" to Smurf F Kennedy?
Or a mix of a Smurf and Mickey Mouse to create a Prince Charles Smurf

And why not, a boxer Smurf saying "I am the greatest"!

I have to say that the campaign is extremely effective, and that it must be unique for a Belgian campaign to make the international headlines.
:sheep: Bored of normality, why not go smurf? :sheep:

Yes I think they should produce promo figurines for Unicef. I have emailed Unicef to suggest it and I asked a couple of days ago about that poster as well so will keep you posted if I get a reply from that!

I'm sorry Rashleigh

I contacted the radio station and also Media Monitors today but the price to get a copy of the segment was quite expensive. I think it was over $170-$200 maybe more as you had to pay copyright, $100 for the tape plus delivery fee plus GST plus whatever else they mentioned... It's not really feasible to get a copy but I do wish all of you guys could of heard what they said....they did say that George Bush has a lot to answer to in relation to the idea of bombing smurfs.

ACK! I hope they don't make promo smurfs with missing limbs and bomb residue on them though

Good point Stace.....I can just see the those dodgy sellers sawing off limbs to make fake promos in the future....poor smurfs :?

I think I must already have that one. My very first Smurf was one that my brother had bitten the arm off, he looks like he is in the wars.

I have a clown and a Beer smurf that have chunks out of them...but they are variations (and not just because they have chunks out of them :) ) so until I can get another one like them then I will hang on to them......once I can replace them I will sell them to Stace as rare variations for mega $$$$ :D

Postby hfos » Thu Oct 13, 2005 12:11 pm
They did a short feature on the Unicef commercial on 'Man bijt hond' ('Man bites dog', a television programme) today, I could download the show, cut it, subtitle it & upload it somewhere if anyone's interested...
