You may remember Dyar asked the questions a little while agoa bout the card player with the sign, but without the "ASS" letter on...

At the time I was convinced that it was an ASS promo variation, simply because the ASS logo includes that V in a circle...

However, I am now a little confused by some Schleich catalogues that I have just received: see the pics below.

The first pic is from the 1982 Schleich catalogue printed in the USA.
You can clearly see the variation with the V on that one.

The 2nd pic is from the 1980s Schleich catalogue from France. There we have the normal heart ace without any V

and then the smurf-a-gram card player with the V this time.

I really wonder what the story behind this is: If it was a promotional Smurf, then it should be in the catalogues and should not be on a normal smurf-a-gram base?

That said though: I have seen a German smurf-a-gram with the ASS card player (V and writing ASS) on top... and it looks like just a normal Smurf-a-gram... so I'm not sure...

Does anyone have any insights?

This is one area that has always confused me David. I am not familiar with who ASS are so I didn't recognise the "V" emblem as anything special. I know in the Katalog that the "V" emblem (only) one is listed in both the regular variations section as well as the promos which confused me as I couldn't see the difference between the 2....which there are none because they are the same variation as far as I can see. You would think that the one with the wording should be the actual promo and perhaps the other one with just the "V" might be left overs.....although not being familiar with the ASS company I don't know how significant the "V" emblem is.

It does seem strange to see one of these ("V") on a sockel though...although I guess it could of been a home made glue on job possibly....or maybe just left over stock from when they stopped producing the wording ones....but then again wouldn't they of done the "V" part at the same time as the wording therefore making no sense what I am gibbering about?

This is a mystery David...more so since you have spotted them in catalogues and on sockels.

I would love to hear other opinions.

The same thing applies with the "Silan promo Papa with Books" to some degree.

In the katalog the orange book variation and the cream variation with the red symbols on the front are mentioned in both the regular and promo sections. Perhaps these were made with both Silan under the foot and without....I know I have both of these ones without Silan under the feet but I thought they might of been loose books that were attached to regular Papa w/ Book smurfs.....but now I am not so sure.

Yeap that's the regular "ASS" one... I have seen that one on a sockle too, (and the sockle was not an ASS promotion, which is highly confusing).

But for the one with just the V in the circle without the writing, it's become a bit of a mystery...

Hi guys, great topic David.

I don't know much about the ASS company I am afraid so I can't help there. I had always presumed the circle without writing was a variation but I have no real proof to base this on. My variation has Hong Kong markings if this helps, I can't check yet but I will have a look soon I promise.



Smurf room is now in a real mess, wallpaper stripped and I am hoping to get the walls prepared Today ready for painting, trouble is in a hundred year old house, there is a fair bit of prepping to do but I am getting there.

Just getting back to the ASS promos for a minute....I checked the ones in my collection and I actually have the ASS promo with wording on the regular German sockel. The card is a bit faded but the ASS wording and V emblem is still clearly visible on the card.....very bizarre.

I also checked out the regular ones I have as well and noticed I had a lighter & darker blue skin version of each of the 2 different promos with the ASS wording one having W Germany Schleich S markings and the one with just the V emblem having Hong Kong markings with a 3rd one in my collection having Hong Kong W.B.CO markings. I am guessing this is the same across the board with the wording (W Germany) and the V only one having (Hong Kong) markings.....does anyone have anything different to this rule?

I think they are a playing cards manufacturer (in Germany)...

But this is completelt unreliable information...
