Hello Everyone,

It has been a couple of months since I have last been on this board. I had some major computer Problems wich have been solved now.

That I wasn't able to visit here didn't mean that I stopped collecting, I have added several smurfs to my collection and also some Plastoys and other smurfy stuff (see pictures) .

As you might remember I am just a beginning collector, so not being able to visit this site for information has been a shame.

I am thinking about putting a website together for me to keep track of my collection and to share with you guys, but I don't really know where to start. Does anybody have any tips to get started on a good-looking, easy to navigate website ( like: www.sgtpapas.com or hiddeninthewoods.com).

I hope to be a part of this community from now on without dissapering again, haha.

Hi Mark! Good to see you back. I think a website is a brilliant idea and it does get very addictive in itself. I don't know much about the free accounts although others on here will be able to tell you all about it. I use a reseller account with www.heartinternet.co.uk and their software is really easy to use. They and company's like them make having a website easy but you do have to pay to use them.

It's good to see you here again Mark. I love those Plastoys, how I'd love to have some too.....

I like the idea of a website & wish you luck in putting one together. I don't have the time to make one myself although I'd love to have one. Part of the problem is that it would be so huge as it would have to include all of my collections, not just smurfs And it would have to include my family tree as well....

Hi Mark; Glad to see another smurfer come back. I don't know anything about building a web site or where to find one. I have all my pic's on a site called flickr. All you have to do is sign up no cost. Then you can put your pic's there. It is very easy to upload pic's there. Mine all go into folders on my computer according to date taken I then upload the whole folder at once. You can also use myspace or facebook but in order for someone to see them they have to join. Flickr they don't. Hope this helps. Bill

Thank you for your nice comments about my website..I use geocities and pay a small monthly charge for it. You can also choose the free geocities pagebuilder but it includes advertisement which I don't like, so I decided to pay for it. It's not high though and gives you a lot of space.

I know that there are other website hosts, but I don't know anything about them, so far geocities has been enough for me. It is work but also a lot of fun as you learn a lot about smurfs and computers

Hi Mark

Nice to see you back on the forum after the computer problems. As Moey said above, a lot of us use geocities for our websites. Geocities is not a bad one to use, especially if you are not familiar with websites as it's a very easy site to work with. I would suggest paying the small monthly fee and avoiding the advertisements that come with the free site, as they are just so annoying.

First thing to do is to sign up with geocities, if that is who you decide to go with for your site. I am not an expert in starting up the sites from scratch, as I had a lot of help from Rach (blueimps), but I am sure between us, we can all help you along the way to get you off and running with your own site.

Thanks everybody for all the reply's.

I'm still thinking about wether I should sign up with geocities or not, Is it worth the €100 euro's it's going to cost me a year?

I do have some webspace from a other website I have, that i can create a smurfy website on, but that way I can't get a good domainname.
Then It would be travel-adventures.nl/smurf or something like that. But it wouldn't cost me any extra money.

I do have some sitebuilding software on my computer, but somehow I just can't put a good working and good looking site together

Is it easyer with geocities, Dyar & Maureen since your sites look amazing?

I don't have any experience with any other types besides geocities so I am probably not a good person to ask about that.....but I can say it's very easy to use that even a Dyar could work it.......and one of the cheapest too. I only pay around $5 Aus a month which is not much, and that's with a recent price rise.

I think it's nicer to have your own unique Smurfy or personal domain name for the site too.....I guess if you are going to put in that amount of effort in creating a Smurf site, you really want to get it right from the beginning.

Mark, that's what I pay. I think Dyar probably signed up with the Australian geocities, which might be cheaper

I decided to pay for my site because I hate advertisement when I go and visit a site, so it was well worth for me to pay for my own and also my own domain name

The reason I went with geocities is that it was readily available for me and I knew that if I needed help I could find it among my friends who are using the same site or used it before.

When I first started I asked Rachel about the different options and she more or less stated that geocities is ideal for beginners. When Blue Imps grew she decided to go with a different sitebuilder, but I love geocities. I have the advanced version now that lets me download the yahoo sitebuilder which I can use offline to build my pages and then download them all at once which I love. With the normal geocities tool you download your pages as you go which works fine, too.

I just checked geocities PRO, it looks they are getting rid of it and will only do webhosting which is what I have If you decide to go with the cheaper option and later want the more advanced one, the good thing is that it won't change your site at all..it will take a while to get your site into the new hosting (depending on the size of your site) but nobody will know that it changed except for you. What I do not like about Webhosting is that it is hard to organize your pictures, which is very easy with geocities Pro.

Wow that is very expensive Mark....I just had a look and you're right with the price on yahoo geocities. I know I don't pay this much and I even paid extra for more space. I just checked a recent email of mine that mentioned a price rise, but this is what they said:

Beginning with your next billing date on or after October 1, 2008,
the monthly price of Yahoo! GeoCities Plus will increase from $4.95
to $6.95 per month.

I don't know if this is just because I am based in Australia or whether it's because I was already a member. I think if they are charging $12 per month then it may be better to shop around and see what other ones are available as Geocities is cheaper for a reason and I think $12 per month is too expensive for what they offer.

I know I have a more expensive one as I wanted to be able to use it offline, which really is the only difference between the ones we both use, so I think you probably have the better link for Mark

I use netfirms.com and it costs me $54 per year + just under $10 per year for the domain name. I find they are great!
