So far we learned about Peyo's childhood and that his career as a illustrator was interrupted during WWII and thus Peyo had to struggle for himself after the end of the war.

But there is another important aspect which has to be added to the history of the smurfs. While Peyo had been working at that film company called CBA, he had already created some dwarfs for a film, which unfortunetly was never competely shot. Those dwarfs were most likely influenced by Walt Disney's animated feature film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".

In 1952, Peyo was helped by his former collegue Franquin, who found a suitable job for him at Spirou, which was a very famous Belgian comic magazine at that time. Peyo elaborated on the middle ages series Johan and Peewit, which he had started earlier on.

Thus, the dwarfs and the middle age series of Johan and Peewit were significant for the development of the smurfs.

Finally, things changed for Peyo completely, when he introduced the Smurfs as minor characters in the Johan & Peewit story "The Flute has Six Holes", which was published on October 23rd, 1958 in Spirou. :D

Right from the start, the smurfs became extremely popular, so that people would write to Spirou and ask for more.

Image

At the end of the 1960's, Peyo left Spirou and founded himself a studio of his own, named after him, where he was giving other talented illustrators an opportunity to self-visualise through their work.

Image

Many of his employees continued to become very successful afterwards e.g. François Walthéry, nevertheless they won't forget how they career began, namely at Peyo's company.

Way back in the early 1950's Peyo had already married his girl-friend Nine and got a son, called Thiérry and a daughter named Veroniqué.

Peyo's studio flourished with the smurf comics now being published for more readers.

The only thing, his wife was not pleased was the depiction of smurfette as a role model for all women. Therefore she refused talking to her hubby for fifteen days. Later Peyo would claim, that he never been in favour of that idea.

Image

During his life-time, Peyo always favoured a united Belgium, in which both Flemish and Wallonian people could live together happily ever after. Thus his attitude was certainly the impact of his cross-cultural heritage.

You may ask yourself now, why then became the smurfs so extremely popular world-wide?

After all, it the late 1970's film adaptation of "The Flute has Six holes" wasn't the first film starring the Smurfs.

They already had been featured in one Belgian b/w short film so far, as you can tell by looking at this pic.

Peyo started out commercializing his Smurfs right in the 1950's, once he realized that people loved them.

In the late 1970's, the Smurfs conquered Hollywood

In the early 1980's, the smurfs became protagonists of a Hanna Berbera cartoon series

The rest is legacy, they hit the big screen world-wide with the adaptation of the Johan and Peewit comic book"The Flute...", they got their own cartoon series... and they conquered our hearts. In order to whom keep the rights within his family, Peyo founded I.M.P.S. Although Peyo passed away in 1992, he will be remembered as the father of the smurfs.

That's such a shame Joaquin! :(

I am not sure the way they did in other cities, but after reading the news, I know they have distributed 3000 smurfs last night, and they have 2000 more for the weekend...500 stores of the center of the city have decorated their wndows with white smurfs and other smurfy items, and there will be a winner of the most beautiful window...

It seems there were three different cities that wanted to be visited: valladolid, Barcelona and Bilbao...So I am thinking the tour is not as secret as they wanted when they began
