Smurfs in odd places...

Hi!

Traveling around you might notice that actually Smurfs themselves travel around quite a bit.
They can be found at spots where you might not expect them. Smurfs appearing at the White House is in that sence not even such a surprise. Over 50 year of media experience and 542 years old makes a great advisor. :D

But we've seen Smurfs also on other places.
Like to share them?

In the Netherlands "Carnaval" is supposed to be most celebrated south of the rivers.
But north from them in places (villages) like Zwaag and Didam are quite big Carnaval parades.

This year for the first time we visted the parade in Didam (close to Arnhem), where actually the carnaval organisations from Loil and Nieuw-Dijk (even smaller villages) have there combined parade of over 150 groups and wagons.

These pictures are from a group showing there youth-sentiment from television when they where young.
A huge display. See for yourself.

All these figures have a sort of steel-wired frame, and than the outside is "Papier-maché". I don't know the translation, but pulp from paper (is literaly from french: chewed paper) with glue.
And than covered with paint and vernis to make it quite hard and resistant.

I love papa's head but the body? why is he so skinny and do I see breasts on him :-?
that float reminds me that mario brothers are in stores here now too, they have a mushroom plush out that could go with a smurf theme had it not been for the face on it.

Gerda, I have to agree with you. Sometimes they reuse the basics of a display like this from a previous year. The new head is indeed very nice done, but maybe they might have done a better job on (re-) doing the body...

Those are really neat! The smurfs were in the Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. These pictures aren't the best, I took them in a hurry off of my tv set. My son called me and said "quick turn on your tv"

That's funny, Norma!

We have an old thread here - http://forum.bluecavern.com/viewtopic.p ... sc&start=0 - on the parade but it was before you joined here. I also posted a youtube video of the smurf portion of the parade if you haven't seen it all yet :D

Those are wonderful photos!!!

I've never been to Schönwald although I have been to the Schwarzwald (Black Forest). That's where my mother-in-law grew up as her parents had a youth hostel down there during the WW2 period.

I had a laugh yesterday when I went to our village doctor. On his desk he has a doctor smurf & a Grim Reaper smurf

In other words he either heals you or you're a gonner....... :o :o

Well, as in size I'm sure this Macy's Parade Smurf will hold the records for quite a while! Loved looking at the other threads and Smurfsterrocks pictures. I guess I had not seen all the threads in the forum yet...

Smurfs MENTIONED in odd places... :-D

Last saturday the european forum members might have watched the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 (won by Norway, and the Netherlands for the 5th year did not even make it to the final..)

Introducing the song from Albania, the dutch commenator said the following:
"ze wordt vergezeld door een prins gehesen in een pakje van een ontplofte smurf" :) :) :) :)

ah...some might need a translation?
"she will be accompanied by a prins fitted in a suit from an exploded smurf..."

The why might become clear if you watch this:
