Hi!

Just found a cracking quote from the Peyo Biography that I thought you may all enjoy!

Does anybody know if this book is avaliable anywhere? Or if anyone has read it? I'd love a copy.

Any help?

Al

"The character Smurfette undeniably embodies some unflattering female stereotypes, and does so on purpose. In a recent biography of Peyo, Hugues Dayez relates a story about the cartoonist's negotiations with NBC for the upcoming Smurf animated series. Peyo apparently spoke little or no English. When the discussion turned to Smurfette, Peyo's interpreter explains:

Peyo began by saying that she was "very feminine." They asked him to be more specific, so he went on to say: "She is pretty, blonde, she has all the characteristics of women…" Knowing the feminist spirit in the U.S.A., I diplomatically translated this as "all the qualities." I was banking on the fact that Peyo did not understand what I was saying (in English) and the others did not understand what he was trying to say. So naturally they asked him to expand. So he kept on going with: "She seduces, she uses trickery rather than force to get results. She is incapable of telling a joke without blowing the punch line. She is a blabbermouth but only makes superficial comments. She is constantly creating enormous problems for the Smurfs but always manages to blame it on someone else." I did my best to minimize the sexist nature of this description, but one of the participants at the meeting asked: "Would she at least be able, when the Smurfs are in danger, to take a decision that can save them?" When I translated this to Peyo, he looked astounded. "Come on now, do they expect me to make her a (female) gym teacher?" I obviously did not translate this remark. [Translation by Valteron]"

Did Peyo not like women? Smurfette sounds really unlikeable.

Good thing the smurfs didn't have a pet fish in the village :!:

Sounds like Peyo was just a misogynist but....

....a pet fish would be a much better character than a dumb old blond girl. :sofunny: Ok, no one point out to me that (A) I am blond and (B) a girl and (C) especially don't call me "old", or Moey will get finned!

Yep. And if Peyo had been a woman, writing that all men are louts, we'd all have a good laugh or sympathize, presuming he'd had a bad experience.

To quote Janis Joplin:
"A woman that's lonely is just a victim of a man."

But, in defense of Peyo, his entire comic is a satire of negative stereotypes. His male smurfs are also portrayed unflatteringly. But, people only comment on smurfette.

Aaaah, I was just joking! 8)

Peyo was a bloody sexist. Smurfette's bulbous bottom, amply exposed in most of the figures, was probably the silhouette of Peyo's dream date. He must 'ave liked 'em saucy, sly, and spankable.

But, seriously, all the smurfs are bloody bastards. Among the first 10 hardback comics, at least, there ain't a single likeable smurf. Even Papa Smurf is quick to anger and a little tut-tutting.

But, that's where the humor is. His early smurf stories are funny comics a little like Charlie Brown in the USA. The later ones after #13 or so get a little bland, turning more like American newspaper comics--silly, sweet, and bland. I can't even read his later stuff.

Actually, they say Peyo liked his Johann and Pirouette stuff better and left the later smurf comics to assistants. You can tell because the later issues have inconsistent art and really dippy one-line jokes.

Yeah, but what annoys me about the books turning crap is the way that, after he died, nobody cared about his intitial thoughts.

There's another quote that says, in a meeting with Hannah Barbera he said that he wanted them to 'Stay Medievel and not end up coca-coca drinkers'.... yet obviously we have the 'trendy' smurfs after his death.

Surely, if his family were left in charge of his empire, they would have respected than and not 'americanised' them, as he wished!

I cannont, personally, look at the 'techno' smurfs without feelinga little ill inside.. and that was before I read the quote. I just feel... y'know... wrong.

Testament to this, when I make my new village, I'm finding it hard, whilst planning for it, where I can put them where they will not obviously look out of place!

Help me smurf commnity, you're my only hope.

Hi Alan, the company is actually still run by the Culliford family but I do totally agree with your sentiments. :-D

Another interesting figure that should be noted if we are talking about Peyo's personal wishes is the body builder smurf 2.0228. According to old SCCI newsletters, this figure was due to be released in 1988 but Peyo did not approve of the mold, it was not "smurflike" so it was not added to that release. It was however released in 1993, a year after Peyo died. :-?

A very interesting information, thanks. I suppose you mean 2.0417: I think it´s really awful!

Isn't that why his shorts are different colours? One from 1993 and one from the 80's?

Or am i wrong?

Still, I like bodybuilder more than 'techno smurf' or whatever his name is, with earring and coke can.....
