I would like to ask our French speaking members what you think about English translations of smurfs? Are names accurate?
Reason I´m asking is that I belive Finnish translations are made from English. And some smurf names are quite weird in Finnish. Some are quite good though.
Here are some...
Papa is called "Pappasmurffi" or "Suursmurffi" which is something like Great smurf.
Brainy is "Välkky" (if you don´t have scandics it´s Valkky with two dots above a) It´s quite good tranlation actually. He was earlier called "Rillismurffi" which means same as four eyes :)
Angry is "Mustasmurffi" it means black smurf.
Handy is "Kätevä" (again if you don´t have scandics it´s Kateva with two dots above a, both of them) That´s good.
Vanity is translated as "Kokettismurffi" in videos. Even I can understand what it means :)
Hefty is "Voimakas" it means strong
Smurfette is "Smurffiina" that´s ok.
Greedy is "Ahne" again good translation.
Harmony is "Pelimannismurffi" which doesn´t really mean same thing. He is also called "Soittaja" which is player (of an instrument).

I think this is enough for now.
Remember the question above :)

A second try for a reply, as my laptop crashed halfway through the previous version :x
I'll give some Smurf names in Dutch and French as I come across them. Most of the translations are fairly good, but the English translations are sometimes a bit lame...
Papa = 'grand schtroumpf' or 'grote smurf' (Great Smurf)
Vanity = 'Le schtroumpf coquet' = 'Ijdele smurf' (more or less Vain Smurf)
Lazy = 'Le schtroumpf paresseux' = 'Luilaksmurf' (Lazy smurf)
Brainy = 'le schtroumpf à lunettes' = 'Brilsmurf' (Smurf with glasses): also sometimes called 'le schtroumpf moralisateur (moralising smurf)
Grouchy = 'le schtroumpf grognon' = 'Moppersmurf' (complaining smurf?)
King Smurf = 'le schtroumpfissime' = 'Smurführer' (French relates to Mussolini, le généralissime; Dutch points to Hitler, the Führer)
Hefty = 'le schtroumpf costaud' = 'Potige smurf' (= Hefty?)
Jokey = 'le schtroumpf farceur' = 'Lolsmurf' (Jokey, Funsmurf)
(BTW, prisoner smurf is jokey smurf!)
Handy = 'le schtroumpf bricoleur' = 'Knutselsmurf' (DIY smurf?)
Eatsmurf (?) = 'le schtroumpf gourmand' = 'smulsmurf' (Tasty smurf :) ?)
Dirty Smurf (?) = 'le schtroumpf sale' (or le sale schtroumpf) = 'Vuile smurf'
Farmer = 'le schtroumpf paysan' = 'Boerensmurf'
Music Smurf = 'le schtroumpf musicien' = 'Muzieksmurf'
Stupid (?) = 'le schtroumpf pas très très malin' (not so very very smart smurf) or 'le schtroumpf bête' (stupid smurf) or 'domme smurf'
Poet = 'Le schtroumpf poète' = 'dichtsmurf'

And Angry = 'le schtroumpf noir' = 'Zwarte smurf' (Black Smurf).

Enough for now? When I find my poster with all 100 Smurfs again, I will perhaps compile a more definitive list...

Thanks Fram.
I think that proved me wrong. Finnish names are actually closer to French than English, so maybe those comics have been tranlated from original versions after all.
I knew about Jokey being Prisoner, but I didn´t know about Stupid smurf. Is he the one that keeps bringing wrong items to Papa? In Finnish comics which I´ve read, he hasn´t got name. Papa thinks in one strip that he ain´t very smart smurf :)

Yes, when Papa wants the zzzz fly (the one that creates the Black Smurfs), he keeps on bringing him butterflies :) I have gotten hisname from a Smurf text story, I don't know if he is called by name in any of the books (I have checked only a few tonight).
