The convict is among the ones they added later and then just wrote the names with a pen.

But other early names like Rocker( Lute), Watchman( Lantern), Not Hearing( earache), Handy( Mechanic) etc. have stickers.

So it is good to see that they match all the names we see on the pictures from Australia.

regarding the sockels used in Australia they were marked W Berrie.

This one lost its smurf, but the traces tells me exactly which marking the goldsmurf had. :D

These are in my opinion among the last PVC-smurfs sold by BP in Australia. Together with RollerskateSmurfette, Tennis Smurfette, Mermaid, Super fireman and other ones like the ones in Kaths guide.

I guess BP could have had the trademark for awhile longer but I think they stopped with the Schleich PVC smurf in late 1982 or early 1983.

As you see on both these surfers they have W.B.Co on their backs, so it could be that some of the smurfs sold in the end by BP in Australia got W Berrie markings?? :-? This is also the time they used the very dark blue paint in the Hongkongfactory in around 1982. So W.B.Co marking was definatly used before the complete W Berrie-marking.

Regarding the VFL-base marking I have only seen this one. I am pretty sure they at this time used it on the Rugby also?? But I have not checked that yet. :D

I have taken some pictures of the other items BP had for sale for Christmas 1980 in Australia.

But first I wanted to show you that the HK signbearer, and also the HK basketball, hurdler, boxer, bars gymnast, existed in Australia before or at the same time they were sold in US. All of these were sold after 1980 in the US.

And here you see the price for the 3 playsets from Schleich sold in 1980 in Australia at the BP stations.

Probably these were the early US boxes marked W Germany. These contained german parts.

Notice that they write new playsets. They already sold the garden furniture, gate, fence etc. containing german parts. Just like they did in 1980 in US. Those boxes are also marked W germany.

the garden furniture playset I have with BP australia markings. :-D

Hi Brad,

the magnets looks really cute. :D

The flapper also looks nice.

I have a few other items, like stickers, badges, paperbasket, books etc from Australia. But I have not seen them in any catalogues or on any posters. They are marked Australia though. See if I can find them somewhere?? :banghead:

its great to see them in an original catalogue and to see how much they original sold for and what items were available. Looking at those photos I had never seen a smurf magnet like that until I found the one with the flag. So its nice to see there are others in the set. Hope I might come across them at some point. Other items pictured like the flapper I have never seen. The squeakers I own the papa smurf but not the normal smurf. Placemats, I have one of those (very back) but not the other two. I have seen one of the porcelain dishes before; the flower smurf dish. Never seen the other two designs and don't own any of them. Seen the puppet many times, don't own one. Seen the flute but I think it is yellow. Seen it at a market but it was missing the smurfs I think... or one of them missing. And it is pictured on Toy Dreamer website. Never seen the photo album. Never come across the door sign or the pocketeer. And wow all the goodies in the surprise stocking! Would love to buy one of those and checkout all the items inside!

Wish I could find more of this stuff more easily at markets.... so many smurfy items released here but you just can't find any of it anymore.

Regarding the hongkongmade smurfs sold in Australia, there are a few like Thirsty, which never was sold by W Berrie in the US. Another one is Cricket.

The Hongkongvariation was sold in Australia in 1981 and can be found with 2 different colours on the bat. Lightbrown and darkbrown. You can see them on Dyars page also.

The darkbrown is glued on the display and the lightbrown I got from another Australian-lot.

By the way the mail just arrived and the new smurfs arrived at my local postoffice. :mail: So I can´t wait to get them straight away. See you later.

Hi Brad & André

I've attached some photos of some of my older items.

I have the photo album (markings are Peyo - SEPP - BP Australia 80).

5 x Swapcards (no markings, but I know I got them the same time as the photo album so they came from the BP - strange no markings). I collected swapcards as a kid.

I have two magnets which I photographed on our fridge (markings are Peyo - BP Australia 80 Made in Hong Kong). Magnets are excellent quality and stay on the fridge really well. I have never seen these at markets either, Brad.

Kath & André have got me thinking about the 2 Australian football smurfs (20150) - the blue jumper and the red jumper. I have a theory and I'm following up with the football league (now the AFL) and will let you know how I go.... I think I may have worked out the reason for the delay in releasing the "red jumper".
:D

SmurfeeJo, great to see you have 2 of those magnets. Will keep an eye out for these in the future. They are nice and I'd like to get more of them. Just never seen them at markets any where until now... never seen on ebay either.

Hi Guys

Thank you for all the pictures and information. I have a Safety Smurf card game which has about eight cards. I will post a pic soon. There is also a bed sheet I had when I was little. My mum sewed two sheets because I worn out one of the sheets.

Regarding the AFL ones I always wondered if it was linked to the release of the song 'up there Cazley' in around 1981/82. There is a recording done by the smurfs that is currently up on EBay. I also think that Cazley would have played for Victoria thus they may have originally given away the Navy Blue ones and they were never sold. Just a theory.

Cheers

Kath

Some info about the first Australian rules and first Hongkong marked rugby.

As you see on my large poster, summer 1981, both those smurfs were sold at the same time at BP in Australia. They could have been available already in early 1981, but you could not get them in 1980.

Both of those smurfs have no markings. The only markings are on the base. They used the same base for both these. You can see that also on the poster. At this point these were not possible to get in US and no W Berrie-markings were on the bases. :D

When they added the W Berrie to the base they also removed the year-marking so they could use the base for more smurfs. But the australian rules smurfmold was made in 1980 and sold the first time in 1981 in the colours on this poster.

Hi Everyone
I recently won a BP Petrol Attendant on ebay. I have only seen it on Christy's blue village website. It may have originally came with the BP playset Andre mentioned earlier though I am unsure what markings the playset came with. I have never seen this playset before.

The markings on this one are W.Germany Schleich S Peyo and a yellow paint dot.

Cheers
Kath
