Sony Pictures' 'Smurfs 2,' 'Houdini' and 'Singularity' to Shoot in Montreal

The Hollywood studio is bringing three CGI-heavy movies to Quebec for production one after the other to take advantage of generous tax breaks and digital media incentives.

TORONTO - Studio movie shoots in Canada these days increasingly come in bunches for added production savings.

Roland Emmerich may have delayed production on his sci-fi epic Singularity in Montreal, but that hasn’t stopped Sony Pictures piling into Quebec with yet more big-budget movie shoots.

The studio is now likely to shoot the $175 million Singularity picture in fall 2012, ahead of a May 2013 release, after Steven Spielberg wraps production on Robopocalypse at the Cite’ du Cinema studio in summer 2012.

Now there’s word Sony Pictures is to shoot the upcoming sequel to The Smurfs and its Houdini project in Montreal as it takes advantage of Quebec’s generous all-spend tax credit and additional digital media tax incentives for live action/CG hybrids.

The studio is near to starting pre-production on The Smurfs 2, which has an August 2, 2013 release, and Jordan Kerner returning as producer.

And Sony Pictures is also sending to Montreal director Francis Lawrence’s high profile film about Houdini, the famed escape artist and magician.

The studio is only the latest Los Angeles producer to secure economies of scale by shooting movies one after the other in Canada, often with the same local production crews and facilties.

Relativity Media had Tarsem Singh shoot the CGI-heavy epic Immortals inside the Cite’ du Cinema studio in Montreal, followed by production of next year’s Julia Roberts-starring Snow White movie Mirror, Mirror, also in Montreal.

And Universal Pictures similarly chose Montreal to shoot Mummy 3 and Death Race one after the other back in 2007.

If it's not NY but the smurf village it will be great !
Please no more humans ! Please no more Sofia Vergara! Please no more Patrick Neil Harris, wife and baby !
Only Gargamel and Azrael are allowed this time.
Please be respectful with Peyo work this time.

I agree, a movie in the smurf village would be great, but I actually didn't think the humans were as much of a distraction as I first thought they would be (the side story was though).

The cartoon series sometimes showed cartoon humans as well in a medieval village so I guess you could say the only new thing in the movie was the time portal :-?

Not being up to date with the comic books, did the smurfs ever end up in a the medieval village in one of the comic books or was this just a cartoon series thing? :-?

Well everyone. I doubt if Sony will look at or even care about what we want. The last film made over $500,000. To me that says what they did was a hugh success. And not only did the kids go to the movie, but in every case I saw at least 1 parent used their kids as an excuse to return to their child hood. There wasn't a whole lot of people there when I went. Maybe 30, but I saw just as many smiles on the adults faces when I left as I did children. They are probibly just going to say, hey not only did they come, they came in droves to see the last one. Lets try it again the same way.

If the Peyo family and Sony have become richer and richer thanks to the first movie
what if they do a good smurf movie this time ? :fingers:

If they don't have any good ideas they could do a mix of smurf stories in the smurf village.
There is the smurfette story, the king smurf, the purple/black smurfs, the sorcerer smurf, the olympic smurfs, Johan and Peewit, Bigmouth, even the baby smurf,...
There are hundreds of ideas before putting some annoying human baby and his parents in a human world full of people, cars, i-phones and businesses.
Please this time do it for Peyo and not for your Bank accounts !
You will be richer anyway ! :please:

That teaser poster is either really rushed or not legit. At anyrate the smurf novel ends with Papa having a vision of Gragamel being at the eifel tower but it is really the replica in Vegas I think not sure if that was in the original script or not. At any rate I'm hoping we see more of the smurf world...the fact thaty are not filming in New York (or Vegas for that matter) gives me hope that we might see more in the smurf world.

You cannot possibly expect finalized product images when they have just began production. Hell they are probably still working on the CG renderings at this point.

I just rather they make a good movie than rush things (well a good movie within the confines and limitations that this type of Scooby doo, Garfield, Chipmunks, Hop etc. type movie has.)

I think that given the fact that Gargamel was left in New York the sequel this time will take place there with the smurfs saving the day and the world. But I would not mind seeing those 2 in a third film though.
